It is often served with rice (hence it is commonly known in the Philippines as arroz a la cubana. Here are a couple of variations that we like. You can add ½ cup chopped white onion if you like. Add the onion at the same time you add the potatoes and carrots.

Steps to make Picadillo:
  1. Saute garlic and onion in oil. Set aside. Cook ground beef/pork/chicken in oil until brown.
  2. If you want potatoes to be a bit crunchy you may cook them in oil too before mixing it with cooked ground meat, carrots and green peas.
  3. Add water/beef broth and bring to boil. Add raisins and olives. Pour tomato sauce and tomato paste and simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until sauce reduces.
  4. Season with oregano, salt, fish sauce and black pepper. Best served with white rice or corn bread and fried plantain bananas.

This is a dish I grew up eating as a kid, and I always loved when my Mom was making it. My friends also loved eating over on nights picadillo was on the menu.
